Erosion and the risk posed by lightning strikes, are the threats that most frequently affect wind turbine continuous operation. In the next video is showcased one of the effects of a lightning strike on a blade. After the impact, the airfoil shape changed generating noise that exceeds allowable limits.

It is important that structural defects are not left untreated or properly assessed. Defects can be structural without posing any immediate risk , but since the nature of each defect is different, this must however be evaluated case by case to avoid neglecting integrity issues.

Regular Inspections using Wind Power LAB’s  Artificial Intelligence algorithm  (AI),   would have spotted  the defects  that caused  the total break down of the wind turbine blade showcased in the image below.  Assuring an optimal performance of the wind turbine throughout its operational lifetime.
